Professional Interests
Research interests lie in the general area of natural products, including the development of an efficient isolation procedure, the application of spectral methods (proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet, and infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and circular dichroism) for structure elucidation and the application of synthetic organic methods for confirmation of structural assignments. The new diterpene ring system is represented by kalminol, a cardiotonic compound from the toxic plant Kalmia angustifolia. A series of labdane type diterpenoids were obtained from the composite Amphiachyris amoena of which the major components were amoenolide A and its acetates. An unusual endoperoxide, amoenolide K and its acetate, were also obtained. Also in the diterpenoid class, a chlorohydrin, chlorosilphanol A, and its related epoxide were obtained from the cup-plant, Silphium perfoliatum. The study of Thalictrum alkaloids has revealed several unusual alkaloids and the first member of a new class of dimeric alkaloids, the protoberberine-benzyltetrahydroisoquinolines such as longiberine.
